Summary

Ruth Ware, the Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller returns with another page-turning psychological thriller。

When she stumbles across the advert, she’s looking for something else completely。 But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss: a live-in nanny position, with a staggeringly generous salary。 And when Rowan arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten by the luxurious ‘smart’ home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture-perfect family。

What she doesn’t know is that she’s stepping into a nightmare – one that will end with a child dead and her in a cell awaiting trial for murder。

She knows she’s made mistakes。 But, she maintains, she’s not guilty – at least not of murder。 Which means someone else is。

Full of spellbinding menace, The Turn of the Key is a gripping modern-day haunted house thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time。

Super easy, quick read。 Very predictable, not very suspenseful。

For having a limited cast and setting, this book does a good job creating suspense。 Ruth Ware is known for her plot twists and big revelations and this book was no exception。 The end felt a bit like Scooby Doo unmasking the villain, along with three (by my count) pretty big twists。 One thing that struck me as odd: the fact that this was a "smart/wired" house (tech-wise) seemed to feature prominently, and it seemed to blow the protagonist's mind。 I had to check to see when it was published (2019) For having a limited cast and setting, this book does a good job creating suspense。 Ruth Ware is known for her plot twists and big revelations and this book was no exception。 The end felt a bit like Scooby Doo unmasking the villain, along with three (by my count) pretty big twists。 One thing that struck me as odd: the fact that this was a "smart/wired" house (tech-wise) seemed to feature prominently, and it seemed to blow the protagonist's mind。 I had to check to see when it was published (2019) because the Internet of Things should no longer be a novel concept。 A refrigerator that keeps a grocery list? Programmable lights and music? Rooms that can be monitored via cameras? Um, yeah。 I think most people probably know someone who lives this way。 Now if this had been written in 1991, I might have been more impressed 。 。。。more

The first half of the book I was bored and wanting to drop it。 Then it was a bit creepy and mysterious at times。 But overall it was really typical and the ending looked familiar to me, I just can't remember were I've read it。 The first half of the book I was bored and wanting to drop it。 Then it was a bit creepy and mysterious at times。 But overall it was really typical and the ending looked familiar to me, I just can't remember were I've read it。 。。。more

Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down。 Although I guessed part of the twist, I was unable to guess everything。 I found the atmosphere that the author created creepy and compelling and liked how the house was almost one of the characters。 Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down。 Although I guessed part of the twist, I was unable to guess everything。 I found the atmosphere that the author created creepy and compelling and liked how the house was almost one of the characters。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Very interesting- finished the audiobook in less than 48 hours! I did not see the twist coming that Rowen was actually Bill’s daughter or that she was lying about her identity in general。 However, the end reveal that Ellie killed Maddie seemed underwhelming for some reason。 The book seemed to lack a proper climax, so I had to take off a star。 Either way, it was an enjoyable read。

This is the third book I read by Ruth Ware and certainly the best。It is a suspenseful murder- mystery that takes place in Scotland。There is the old house converted to absolute modern wi-fi ready manor with every conceivable wi-fi convenience you could think of。We have the nanny, of course, a secret garden, even a poison garden, a young handy-man and all the necessary extras to make a modern-day gothic thriller 。。。 but doesn't succeed in the genre。This book has many twists and turns and keeps you This is the third book I read by Ruth Ware and certainly the best。It is a suspenseful murder- mystery that takes place in Scotland。There is the old house converted to absolute modern wi-fi ready manor with every conceivable wi-fi convenience you could think of。We have the nanny, of course, a secret garden, even a poison garden, a young handy-man and all the necessary extras to make a modern-day gothic thriller 。。。 but doesn't succeed in the genre。This book has many twists and turns and keeps you guessing and has a great ending。Rowan Caine certainly can keep a secret, even though her life takes a horrendous turn。 。。。more

This was sort of meh for me。。。。 didn't love it but didn't hate it, it took me a while to get through - just didn't excite me。 The first 75-80% of the book is fairly slow burning, you meet Rowan who we're introduced to through her letter that she's writing to an attorney after she's accused of murdering one of the children she nanny's for。 From the beginning Rowan alludes to not being the person she's portraying herself to be, this ruins a few twists in the end for me - felt like the story was sp This was sort of meh for me。。。。 didn't love it but didn't hate it, it took me a while to get through - just didn't excite me。 The first 75-80% of the book is fairly slow burning, you meet Rowan who we're introduced to through her letter that she's writing to an attorney after she's accused of murdering one of the children she nanny's for。 From the beginning Rowan alludes to not being the person she's portraying herself to be, this ruins a few twists in the end for me - felt like the story was spoiling itself in a way。 I thought the "smart house" element was interesting but didn't actually have any impact on the plot which frustrated me because I felt like a lot of time was spent talking about it。 The ending, while the most interesting part, felt lackluster to me and rushed。 Overall very underwhelming in my opinion。 。。。more

Spooky, creepy, and enthralling! I really enjoyed the twists and turns in the story and the fact that the author did not leave any loose ends。 Just a good, fun read。

Ruth Ware and I have a up and down relationship。 This was not my favorite of her books, but it wasn't my least favorite either。 I really enjoyed the imagery created。 I felt like I was there in those rooms with Rowan and I was nervous and scared right along side of her。 While I liked Rowan, the children in the story are not the most likable charecters。 they are beyond just bratty kids they are truly horrible。 The smart house seemed super problematic and a bit unrealistic。 Most of the plot twists Ruth Ware and I have a up and down relationship。 This was not my favorite of her books, but it wasn't my least favorite either。 I really enjoyed the imagery created。 I felt like I was there in those rooms with Rowan and I was nervous and scared right along side of her。 While I liked Rowan, the children in the story are not the most likable charecters。 they are beyond just bratty kids they are truly horrible。 The smart house seemed super problematic and a bit unrealistic。 Most of the plot twists I had figured out way in advance which was disappointing。 Even the small plot twists were heaviely foreshadowed。 。。。more

It was decent。 Predictable at times。 At times I had a lot of empathy for the main character and other times I rolled my eyes。 All in all a decent escape read。

I was not sure what to expect when I started reading Turn of the Key。 I knew it was a thriller (not my typical genre) and that a lot of my colleagues wanted to read it as well。 The result is however, I'm very happy that my book club, and my work's book club, both decided to read this book。 My complaints about the book are few, simply that it took a while to feel invested in the story and that I have never seen anyone write a letter that long。 At the same time, Ware is successful in not leading t I was not sure what to expect when I started reading Turn of the Key。 I knew it was a thriller (not my typical genre) and that a lot of my colleagues wanted to read it as well。 The result is however, I'm very happy that my book club, and my work's book club, both decided to read this book。 My complaints about the book are few, simply that it took a while to feel invested in the story and that I have never seen anyone write a letter that long。 At the same time, Ware is successful in not leading the reader to believe there will be a happy ending - because from the start you know it is highly unlikely。 While the beginning of the novel was slower to get though, it is important, so that the details of Heatherbrae House, the mysterious happenings, and the cast of supporting characters could be firmly ground。 Ware was meticulous in building a series of mysterious events that came to a fantastic finish。 I was blown away by the crafting that led up to the last 70ish pages of the book。 It was a wild ride that left me thinking all night。Edit addition: I just learned of it's connection to Henry James' Turn of the Screw, and I am interested to read the original。 。。。more

This book is about a woman telling a story through letters to an attorney begging him to take her case。 The end of her letters do not bring closure to her story。 It continues on until the very last letter and then boom! It comes together。 Lots of pieces in this puzzling novel。

Absolutely brilliant。 It hooks you like a-Imagine a fish with its mouth pierced, the sharp end of the hook shining, poking out above the upper lip, convulsing at the end of a fishing line。That's you。 Absolutely brilliant。 It hooks you like a-Imagine a fish with its mouth pierced, the sharp end of the hook shining, poking out above the upper lip, convulsing at the end of a fishing line。That's you。 。。。more

This genuinely terrified me。 I felt so creeped out reading this and was so hooked into the story… but I can’t figure out if I like the ending or not?

Wowwww… That’s all I have to say。 The ending had me putting all of the pieces together from the beginning of the story。 I had NO idea that the ending was going to end like THAT。 I’m just so flabbergasted and amazed at how well the story was out together。 That plot twist though!!!4 out of 5 stars

Oh, okay very interesting! I liked the style of this writing, in long letter form。 That was fun。 Without giving too much away I think it adds to the narrator's character and gives the book more of a "Can we trust this person?" feel。 Which I think is great fun for a thriller。 Wasn't at all taken back by the smaller twists, but the actual whodunit part has left me a bit in pieces。 Like。。。。 What!
